Extra C
The Extra C Team was originally formed in the 70s (not 1870s) as a seventh team and has since become legendary in rugby circles, whilst not always being the 'darling' of the Club.
Several prominent members of the Club have managed and represented the Mighty Cs (Paul and David Giblin, Mick Murphy, Keith Bradley, Barrie Starbuck, John Greenwood, Mark Birch etc...) and the team has become the epitome of grass roots rugby.
We are now officially recognised as Huddersfield's Fourth XV, but turning out is not a pre-requisite for getting a game arranged. Our fixtures tend to be arranged on an ad-hoc basis with 'friends' of ours like Wath, Vandals, YMCA, Heath etc, and we are not a team to go to the ends of the earth for a game. We would rather stay quite local to keep our carbon footprint down and make sure we are tucked up in bed in time for the X Factor.
To us, the camaraderie of being part of a team of very mixed ability (more like a comprehensive school than a grammar), harnessed with the social element of rugby, is far more important than possessing technique or fitness, being fleet of foot or having any skill relative to rugby whatsoever.
As implied, the ability to play rugby is not paramount but being thick-skinned, insensitive, boisterous, old (we have two over 60s still turning out), fat, bald and ugly - as well as benevolent - is more likely to make you slot seamlessly into being part of the Extra C legend.
Pre-match training is in the Flyboat, Aspley every Friday evening with other social events such as Christmas lunches, Zinzan Sykes's summer training camps, international matches and the very odd seaside trip providing the highlights of the season.
We have no time for prima donnas who can only play in 10 different positions, as your capability to fit into a shirt and manage to tie your own boot laces is much more important.
Come and join the Mighty Cs – ALL WELCOME!
