A Team

The A Team was originally formed in 1919 as the second team for The Huddersfield Old Boys and has since been a pivotal part of Huddersfield Rugby Union Football Club. In its current format, we represent the Club as the Third XV, playing in the Yorkshire Western Merit League.

This season sees Richard Baxter take over as captain, aided by sprightly Iain Shelton as his vice.

This season also sees the appointment of quinquagenarian Steve Lynch as kicking coach & Marcus Wood as skills coach.

Joe Shiels continues as strength and conditioning coach, after overseeing the traditional deterioration in fitness last season.

Ad Lancaster gave up this year as our team psychologist & motivator, but we are pleased to be able to promote Steve Parry to a similar position in order to look after our UPS (and occasional downs) over the year. Richard Sowerby keeps his much cherished role as touch judge & SAGA representative.

The A Team has not been much of a platform for any of our players to advance their careers, although the odd one of us do occasionally turn out for the second team. That said, Matt Johnson is Chris Johnson’s brother. Perhaps our most famous player is Luther Burrell although he never actually played for us.

We are not ones to travel to the end of the earth for a game & for us, winning whatever league we are in is not the be all & end all. If you feel that we can aid you in your aspirations as a player then you are sadly misguided & on the wrong bit of the website.

However we do like to think we have got the balance between having fun on & off the field about right & new players are of course, most welcome. You don’t have to be any good but if you are then you would be even more welcome.
