U14's - YORKSHIRE CUP WINNERS

Published: 19/04/2016

HRUFC U14's are the Yorkshire Cup champions - again!

They achieved a first for the club on Sunday when they beat a favoured Morley side 22-15  to lift the Yorkshire Cup for the Second season running in a fantastic team performance.

The first XV pitch at Dinnington was surrounded by a healthy crowd who enjoyed some fantastic rugby.

The match couldn’t have started better when straight from the kick off Joe Porter stole the ball and after quick hands the ball found itself with No 8 Joe Morrison who dived over in the corner. Jacob Gannon missed the kick but with the support of a huge Huddersfield following of over 150 behind them the boys had set the tone for the day – hard , fast and uncompromising rugby. However, against the run of play the dangerous Morley winger made his way over.

Straight back the boys went through the phases for Centre Dan Wood to storm over from 30 yards outpacing the Morley Back line. Jacob Gannon kicked the goal from the sidelines.

10 Minutes later talisman and Captain Fred Woodhouse powered over for Huddersfield under the posts and with a lead of only 14  that was going to be a hard lead to defend with the wind and slope against them in the second half. Ferocious tackling from the likes of Fred Wilkinson, Thomas Sunderland and Alisdair Braidley made the Morley task difficult . However, within 5 minutes Morley had scored under the posts but the conversion was inexplicably missed.

With ball in hand the Huddersfield boys played tight, smart rugby but with 10 minutes left the dangerous Morley winger broke from within his own half . Fred Woodhouse chased back 70 metres and not only did he make a try saving tackle he stole the ball and brought it back with interest. A true game changer. After constant Hudderfield pressure Jacob Gannon kicked a penalty to make the score 22-10.

With the last play of the game the Morley winger scored again but as the re-start went into touch the referee blew his whistle to the delight of the Huddersfield masses. The boys were and are a credit to themselves, the club, their coaches and their parents.

Again true Hudderfield spirit had won the day and the boys have written their own piece of club history. As 1st xv Gaz Lewis said before the game they had an opportunity to become legends which they grasped with both hands.
