Huddersfield Claim Victory in Dramatic Fashion against Preston

Huddersfield claimed their second last gasp victory in succession as a Kian Stewart try won it right at the death at Lightfoot Green against Preston.

Stewart pounced on a mishandled pass to run over the try line in complete freedom and spark wild celebrations on the Field dugout in a game which the away side had seemingly let victory slip through their fingers.

The game started in a fashion which wouldn’t have suggested the drama that was to come, with Preston on the front foot and keeping Field pegged back in their own half, but it was the visitors who would open the scoring.

Lewis Workman went on a superb run which took Field within touching distance of the Preston try line and the ball was eventually worked out to Liam Parfitt who skipped past a challenge before breaking over, a great reward for some resolute defending.

The feeling was unfortunately to be short-lived as Field allowed Ben Dorrington to too easily get Preston’s first try of the afternoon under the posts, with Jake Squirrell converting to ensure the home side gained a slender advantage which they held as the half time whistle blew.

Field had defended well for long periods in the first half, so there was major disappointment when just moments after the start of the second Matt Crow snuck over the try line on the far side and extended the hosts advantage to seven points.

The visitors looked for a way back into the contest and got it when pressure told and a penalty was won, which Will Milner duly sent between the posts to get Field back into it.

This hope had been seemingly extinguished when Matt Lamprey broke from a Preston maul and crashed over to make it 17-8, with Liam Parfitt going off with a yellow card due to an offence during a challenge.

Cue the drama. With the game slipping away from Fields grasp Lewis Workman continued his impressive first start of the season by wiggling his way through the Preston pack and pouncing underneath the posts, Milner converting to bring the away side back into contention.

Moments later a Preston pass was intercepted brilliantly by Tom Hodson who ran clear to put Field ahead, Milner’s conversion giving them a five-point advantage to defend for the closing stages.

Defend they did and the first away victory of the season was in sight, but it was agony for Field when significant Preston pressure told and Jordan Dorrington forced his way over to tie the scores at 22 apiece.

A gut wrenching try to give away and the afternoon was set to end in frustration. Step up Kian Stewart.

The full back was the quickest to react to a mistake in possession from Preston and ran the length of the Lightfoot Green pitch to win it right at the very last and secure a bonus point for Field in the process.

Milner added the conversion to give the score line some gloss and send the away dugout into raptures, the final whistle blown straight after to hand Field victory in the most dramatic of circumstances again after last weeks grand finale against Scunthorpe.

Head Coach Gareth Lewis afterwards stated “I’m really proud of the way the boys approached this game. The attitude all week has been first class and that fed into the performance. We had to defend for large spells and withstand a very strong scrummage, but we hunted together, turned them over and were clinical in taking our opportunities.”

“There were a number of very good performances but I have to say Liam Stapely was outstanding on debut. He was up against a strong scrum and was under pressure in the line out but showed what he’s capable of and must kick on now.”

Next time if there is to be victory Lewis and his players will be hoping it can be in much more comfortable circumstances as Wharfedale come and visit Lockwood Park, looking to bounce back after a home defeat against Sheffield Tigers which leaves them on the same points tally as Field after six games played with 13.
