Huddersfield fell to a heavy 45-3 defeat at league leaders Hull Ionians in their final away league match of the season.

The result was a little harsh on 'Field who were on top for much of the first half.

Ultimately though, Hull deserved their win.

Huddersfield made a good start and spent the first ten minutes camped in the Hull half.

It resulted in a penalty converted by Joel Hinchliffe to give the away side a surprise lead.

However, Hull quickly hit back with a try from the speedy Sam Wilson down the left wing, James Ferguson converting.

It had been Hull's first real attack and 'Field still looked to press but the home side defended well.

They extended their lead on 30 minutes when a Huddersfield mis-kick fell straight to Alex Torkington to score, no conversion.

And a well-worked move shortly before half-time gave Steve Johnson the chance to make the score 17-3 going into the break.

'Field could consider themselves unlucky to be behind but in the second half, Hull began to shown their promotion credentials.

An intercepted pass let Ferguson in for an early try, scoring the conversion himself.

Hull then began to assert their dominance and another try followed on 58 minutes, a dangerous scrum letting in Wilson for 31-3.

Huddersfield were tiring and being pinned back. Makin increased Hull lead with ten to play.

'Field made a push forward with time running out and had their first sustained attack of the half snuffled out by the Hull defence.

The final try came on 80 minutes, Tony Beharrel finishing with the conversion giving the score a more generous look than Hull perhaps deserved.

Huddersfield will however go into next week's final game of the season against Chester looking to cap a highly successful return to the National 2 with a win.
