HUDDERSFIELD V PETERBOROUGH LIONS - MATCH PREVIEW

Published: 08/02/2019

Gareth Lewis declares Huddersfield are ‘itching to get going again’ after last weeks postponed match at Tyndale.

And that they should be, with an appetiser fixture awaiting them at Lockwood Park on Saturday against Peterborough Lions.

On the back of a 33-17 win last time out, Field are looking to bolster their charge on the top of the table- sitting four points adrift of the leaders with a game in hand.

Looking to upset the odds and spur on their hopes of survival are point thirsty Peterborough, who will have to come well equipped should they hope to produce an upset.

Currently the lowest scoring team in the National 2 North, The Lions have to break through a tremendously stalwart Huddersfield defence, who have conceded 356 points so far this season – a statistic bettered only by fellow title contenders Chester with 349.

In their latest fixture, The Lions crumbled under the might of Fylde losing 7-38, and ‘Field will have it in their best interests to match the achievements of their promotion rivals.

However, Peterbrough have showed backbone when they needed to most. Last month they locked horns with South Leicester and emerged the victors, Ben Young in particular is a ‘lively fly-half’ that could pose a threat to Field.

Huddersfield continued to impress with their defensive work last time out against Sheffield Tigers, their final line in the last 10 yards proves rock solid time, and time again this season.

Their professionalism and unity shone through in the last two minutes of that game, which saw captain Dickie Piper continue to urge his team into every scrum and tackle despite the game seeming dead and buried.

And Lewis is confident that his side will not underestimate their opponents.

He said: “It’s important we impose ourselves on the game early but at the same time we must respect Peterborough.

“They had a particularly good driving maul in the away fixture and have beaten Chester and Macclesfield this season already.

“Selection has been tough this week with players returning from injury and the additions of Elliot Hodgson and Adam Williamson.

“However, with only one free weekend between now and the end of the season it’s all hands on deck and it will require a huge squad effort.”
