Huddersfield Under 10’s
2007 Newbury Festival Report
At the Newbury Junior Rugby Festival, held on Sunday the 22nd April, Huddersfield RUFC Under 10’s found themselves grouped with Manchester, Alton, and Maidenhead in a competition that 12 teams had entered.
Huddersfield’s first fixture was against Manchester, a rugged and industrious team who would not let Huddersfield play their naturally expansive game, who in turn would not scrap to possess the territory and dictate affairs. Manchester won 2-0.
The Lockwood Park lads pulled themselves together and secured a comfortable win against Alton in their second match. Their final group match was against the eventual group winners, Maidenhead, who although they had beaten all the others comfortably, found themselves against a team that was finally revealing its true nature and the southern club was hit by a whirlwind, Huddersfield soon took the lead and deserved to increase it on several occasions, Maidenhead, unbelievably, equalised with the final play and everyone from Yorkshire was left wondering what gods or mortals had conspired to steal their deserved victory.
Huddersfield can be a formidable force; their final placing of third in the group did neither reflect their true quality nor their performances throughout the morning. Never the less they went forward into the Plate Finals with Guernsey and Petersfield. The first match, against Guernsey was not their most attractive rugby but Huddersfield kept the game tight and won 1-0. The final game, against Petersfield was a controlled performance from Huddersfield with tries in either half that saw them run out 2-0 winners of the match and winners of the Plate.
Huddersfield did not lose after their first game, and their deserved winning of the Plate was their third trophy of the season, having earlier been outright winners of their own Festival Competition and the Moortown Festival Competition. They can justifiably reflect on their not inconsiderable achievements and some wonderful performances this term.

Huddersfield RUFC Under 10’s Report Sunday April 1st 2007
Huddersfield RUFC Under 10’s were nobodies fools on Sunday April 1st when, as the host team, they beat all opposition in their age group tournament, a part of what was a really splendid Junior Rugby Festival staged throughout the day at Lockwood Park.
The YMCA began the competition by beating Cleckheaton 4-1, Huddersfield then began their campaign with a clinical performance against Rishworth, emerging 7-0 winners.
After a finely balanced game between YMCA and Ripon that finished 2-2, and Cleckheaton playing Rishworth, the Lockwood Park outfit produced the performance of the day, with breathtaking passes and explosive tackling from the kick-off to the final whistle in a match that finished with a 6-0 victory against Ripon.
The YMCA then beat Rishworth 5-0, and Huddersfield followed by producing another of their controlled displays beating Cleckheaton 5-0.
As the tournament continued, time was edging toward the confrontation between the two top teams, both unbeaten, Huddersfield and the YMCA. Neither disappointed in a rugged and at times explosive game. No quarter was given by either side, the deadlock not broken till almost half time when finally Huddersfield breached the YMCA defence and went into the break 1-0 up. The second half mirrored the first and Huddersfield ran out 2-0 winners.,
Huddersfield Under 10’s played four and won four, they scored twenty tries and kept a clean sheet throughout, they were deserved winners of the tournament, and undoubtedly played their best rugby of the season.
Thanks must be given to all the volunteers, particularly the members of the Army Cadet Force, who helped organise the Festival, and made it such a splendid occasion for all.

Vs Rochdale 11th March
As a cold wind swept across the Rochdale ground, HRUFC Under 10’s fell beneath their own wintry spell and were bewitched into yet again failing to play as a team and pass the ball. The legacy of tag rugby is long lasting.
There were good moments in the first half, particularly from Nick Davies whose carrying and timely releasing was exemplary, but the Lockwood Park outfit had most of the possession against an inexperienced Rochdale team and should have changed ends with far more than two tries to their credit.
The second half saw the arrival of both the warm Spring air and Lewis Bradley from across the Pennines, these two additions brought some heat to the game, Huddersfield showed more conviction, moving the ball around and playing for each other. The tries began mounting up and the Under 10’s showed what a fine team they can be.
As the sun broke through towards the end of the game, so did Joe Seddon, scoring a try of flair and determination that left the spectators quite dazzled. The final score was 7-1 to Huddersfield yet they remain as mercurial as their own indigenous weather!

Huddersfield RUFC Under 10s v Ilkley,
Sunday 18th February
Depleted by illness and holidays, Huddersfield Under 10s travelled to take on Ilkley Under 10s on a sunny morning with conditions perfect for running rugby. The home side, crowned district cup champions earlier in the season, were defending a long unbeaten streak and comprised a powerful forward pack and an intimidating set of skilful backs.
The game began with a series of powerful surges by the Ilkley forwards. The smaller Huddersfield team were being knocked backwards and seemed to have lost the ambition and belief that had characterised recent victories over Blackburn and Skipton. Nevertheless, brave defence from Joe Ramsden, George Kitchen and Nick Davies held Ilkley at bay until a string of strange refereeing decisions gifted Ilkley two tries to their strong-running prop forward and captain.
A crooked feed at a scrum, unnoticed by the referee, led to a third try when the Ilkley stand off was driven over the line by his forwards. The subsequent uncharacteristic remonstration with the referee saw Huddersfield coach Paul Royston banished to the stands. This might have led to the collapse of a weaker side but it immediately galvanised his Huddersfield side who tore into the opposition from the restart. The team retained possession for the remaining minutes of the half and were rewarded when George Oakley outpaced the Ilkley backline to go over in the corner shortly before the break.
The game took on a completely different complexion in the second half. The entire Huddersfield side were fired up and playing great rugby. Determined running by Will Burgess, Dan Cross and Tom Charlesworth began to punch holes in the Ilkley defence. Brilliant support play by Alex Bawn and offloading by Nick Davies and Joe Ramsden retained possession and only desperate tackling by Ilkley kept Huddersfield out. The high point of the match arrived with a rampaging run by Nick Royston who barged through to the line carrying several Ilkley players with him.
The Ilkley team now seemed visibly deflated and began to tire. It was only a matter of time before Huddersfield drew level and the moment finally came when George Oakley squirmed through a mass of opposition players and was driven over the line by the rest of his team. The whistle blew with Huddersfield well on top but still seeking the winning try. The magnificent second half performance by Huddersfield, dominating one of the top sides in Yorkshire and coming back from a three try deficit, augurs well for the remainder of the season and for the team’s annual pilgrimage to the Newbury rugby festival in April.

Scoring within the first minute of play against Skipton in a triangular tournament at Skipton, Huddersfield laid the myth of their not being good travellers, and mirrored their last home performance by running in five tries in the first period.
This symmetry continued into the second half, the visitors defence held firm, they scored a further two tries and Huddersfield ran out with a 7-0 victory and perhaps their best display of the season.
Huddersfield tries: L. Bradley, W. Burgess, T. Charlesworth, N. Davies,
G. Oakley (2), J. Seddon.
The second match of the tournament saw Blackburn beat Skipton 7-1, setting up a final game that promised to be the match of the day.
Huddersfield having the advantage of having just rested began with some good considered rugby gradually wresting control of the game which they then translated into a score and the lead. They immediately lost concentration and allowed Blackburn to equalise, but credit must be given, for they didn’t panic, they stifled their giddiness and finished the half 3-1 ahead.
The second half dissolved into a tetchy and fractious affair, neither team discharging themselves with honour, fortunately the game was lit up by some brilliant and audacious individual runs from George Oakley who scored four tries in Huddersfield’s 5-2 victory.
Huddersfield tries: L. Bradley, G. Oakley (4).

Huddersfield Under 10’s fielding a reduced squad in their home fixture against Rishworth on Sunday 29th January set off at a furious pace scoring 5 tries in the first period of play, courage and commitment being the hallmark of their play in this phase.
After adding a further 2 tries in the second period, Huddersfield inevitably paid the price of just one rolling substitute and the game slowed. Credit must be given to Rishworth who remained unbowed after Huddersfield’s earlier onslaught but the visitors were unable to breach the hosts’ defences.
The final period of play was an opportunity missed for Huddersfield to concentrate on their technique and teamwork. In what was a well handled match the sportsmanship of both teams flourished, and the game was crowned with a late hat-trick of tries by Huddersfield’s Joseph Ramsden.
The final score was Huddersfield 10, Rishworth 0.
Huddersfield Tries : L. Bradley (2) W. Burgess (2) N. Davis (2) J. Ramsden (3) J. Seddon

Playing at Sandal in a triangular tournament, on Sunday 14th January Huddersfield RUFC Under 10’s found themselves playing in conditions heavily favouring the opposition in their first match against Sandal “A”. .Playing with no little courage Huddersfield finally conceded a score just before half time and lost the match 0-4.
Facing similar conditions in their second match the Under 10’s would not be bowed and came from behind against Sandal “B” to lead 3-2 when after the end of ordinary time Sandal stole the equaliser from a pass that appeared to be more than 45° forward leaving the final score at 3-3, Huddersfields try scorers were L. Bradley (2), and N. Davis.
In their final match against Otley, Huddersfield again came from behind to win 2-1 with a sterling performance in what was a fine contest. Try scorers were J. Ramsden and N. Davis.
